Our ivory ball gags were removed and joined the other soiled objects in the bucket. I noticed Louisa’s breathing was loud and harsh, her eyes unfocused. The leather saddle was damp to the touch with her sweat. A knock on the door, it opened, and Miss Frothinglips sailed in as a clipper under full canvas. She ignored us both and whispered to Mrs. Cleanknockers. A sharp swivel of the head and her shoulders stiffened. With nary a backwards glance, Mrs. Cleanknockers strode out the door: Miss Frothinglips, after handing Louisa a clean uniform, followed swiftly. Left alone with my nemesis.

I have a serious question (because I can be serious sometimes, you know!) that maybe you or any of your readers may be able to answer. Where do people lie on the position of ball gags? (By the way, the thought of an ivory one is divine) I ask because I was writing about one the other day, for something which will be published on Amazon, and just happened to mention it to someone who told me immediately to take it out, due to its issues with non-consent. Maybe they were right, as I was trying to write a kind of “payback” scene, which definitely pushed the boundaries of non-consent. I still may include it and see what my beta readers think. But what about more generally in erotica? Permissible or not? Under what circumstances? Is it OK to write a rape scene in a crime fiction book to show the nature of the criminal, but not OK to use elements of non-consent in erotica to show the unpleasant nature of a character (as opposed to a stroke scene)? Should actual erotic play in stroke scenes be censored for authors like that? I’m very interested in thoughts on this.

I do have a problem with the view that fictional rape and violence is fine if labeled ‘crime or mystery’ but is off-limits in erotica. Somehow we accept obscene dead body counts in both books and visual media, but to show actual sex or genitalia, or actual spanking and BDSM is labeled offensive and worthy of censorship. I am sure you can find thousands if not tens of thousands of books on Amazon that mention ball gags, either in word or deed. Where is the line between stroke and erotica and romance? I’ve read many a mainstream romance that features more explicit sex than some so-called erotica. I’ve read violent sex in #1 best-selling novels by acclaimed authors. Standards are an ever shifting target that most of the time make no sense. I am positive that if you included a lengthy scene with a ball gag and non-consensual punishment, but called it age-play, Amazon would welcome it with open arms.

You’re completely right. Standards, as far as the book market go, seem to be an ever-shifting cornucopia of double standards and hypocrisy. I don’t know that there has to be a line drawn between stroke and erotica and romance, but where that leaves an author on the virtual bookshelves is anyone’s guess! Hmm, I’ll have to think of a way of giving my character his just desserts (another obnoxious character of mine!) while playing ball (gags) with the Amazon gatekeepers.

As far as a ball gag being being something forced, i.e. non consensual, I would say they are very consenting, especially if that’s in the context written.

Thank you! I agree that’s perfectly possible and plausible. The issue comes with not being able to say ‘stop’ (or use a safeword), apparently, as far as the online bookstores are concerned. Consensual erotic moments, to me, can involve whatever implement or toy the people involved bring into play. It’s where I might fall foul, though, as my character is being punished by the very women he recklessly and thoughtlessly abuses earlier on in the story. So it’s still a bit of a grey area for me, from a writerly perspective.
